Is there any way at all? (I’m not going to) To wipe my memory clean (Hold my breath) I’ll take anyone (Or hope on a star) Who says I’m less than none (Not like I used to do) Look inside and all you’ll see (When I was like you) I am not worth ravaging (I’m not going to) For anything past not-at-all I’ll take phenobarbital I have no use for memory But still I can’t help remembering Losing all my teeth (I’m not going to) But I was still a thief (Hold my breath) Once I had all I could take (Or hope on a star) I turned it into mud (Not like I used to do) I’m not scared but I’m trembling (When I was like you) I’m not cold but I’m shivering (I’m not going to) I’m a feral animal In a masochistic ritual It was all inside of me Take it back get rid of me I was never cursed But I had nothing left I had what I started with I was home and sick and dressed Everyone was right But I wasn’t quite And I couldn’t see Without wood and light For anything past not-at-all (I’m not going to) I’ll take phenobarbital (Hold my breath) I’m not scared but I’m trembling (Or hope on a star) I’m not cold but I’m shivering (I’m not going to) I’m not sold but I’m interested (Hold my breath) I’m not old but I’m withering (Or hope on a star) I’m not there but I’m listening (Not like I used to do) I’m not loud but I’m deafening (When I was like you) I’m not hurt but I’m hemorrhaging I’m not done but I’m surrendering

I hold you up to the same three words of an atom bomb Taking control again for the hollow men Who will be in this water scene? It’s so distinct that I’m paralyzed. I hold you up to the same three words of an atom bomb The same three words To come so fast Just for you The lights go out and I dilate just to see you there Warming our feel to touch and you tell me such Who will be in this water scene? It’s so distinct that I’m paralyzed. I hold you up to the same three words of an atom bomb The same three words To come so fast Just for you I know they’re all twisted I know they all twist The same three words To come so fast Just for you

Eyes on you Clear as any water true Lying in state I could swear you’re awake Replace everything shine quarter fives In arms static there, they’re feeling fine In three-quarter time we spring forward trying Eyes on you Clear as any water true Lying in state I could swear you’re awake Replace everything shine quarter fives In arms static there, they’re feeling fine In three-quarter time we spring forward trying Everything’s OK we keep quiet for weeks In two worlds or one? It’s all the same thing Nothing’s unending and we’re not unique Eyes on you Clear as any water true Lying in state I could swear you’re awake As math proves the absolute We shine quarter fives As math proves the absolute In three-quarter time As math proves the absolute We spring forward trying As time proves the absolute We’re feeling fine

I can’t stand being around here And breathing this bad air in these city streets I won’t take anymore bullshit I’ve put up with enough of it for way too long I lay it down I won’t be around And I’m leaving tomorrow Don’t follow me I’m leaving tomorrow Don’t follow me tonight I’ll wake up to another parking fine The fault is rarely mine in this dirty town So I’ll go down to City Hall And I’ll show them all. Just wait and see. And the parking meters will be blown to bits. ‘Cause I’m so sick of it. And I’m leaving tomorrow Don’t follow me I’m leaving tomorrow Don’t follow me tonight Later on I’ll pick up the paper and read the headlines that say somebody made her And I’ll run free and far from this place To the rolling hills and even further just in case. And I’m leaving tomorrow Don’t follow me I’m leaving tomorrow Don’t follow me tonight

Write this down it’s not what’s happening I’ll be there in case you start to sink I am lying there in water wings Looking up I see you start to wink Write this down it’s not what’s happening Mine was fair and yours was less than that Had a scar that didn’t come from much Took a guess and ended with a hunch We’ll be there in novice ways We’ll be there in second place When the link is gone and not replaced We’ll just trade our age for our enemies’ Not one word to say that it’s absurb

about

The Pawners' Society was my friend Stephanie Morris and me. We started performing together in 2007. We were both songwriters and wanted to explore softer music that highlighted our vocal harmonizing. We recorded this EP of songs that was mastered and awaiting cover art when she died on June 1, 2009.

This is the five-year anniversary since she's been gone and our songs have never been released. I still think about her every day and miss hearing her sing, but it’s become increasingly sad that our music has gone largely unheard. I decided to at least put the EP on Bandcamp for people to download, with an option to donate money. Any proceeds will go toward suicide prevention or Girls Rock! Chicago, a non-profit to encourage girls' participation in rock music.

about

The Pawners' Society Chicago, Illinois

Stephanie Morris and John Huston began playing together in 2007. By early 2009 they had an EP ("Pull the String") recorded, mixed, mastered and awaiting the completion of the artwork when Stephanie died. Those songs -- and other unfinished demos -- laid dormant for five years. They deserve to be heard. ... more
